Alumni meeting with graduates from Production Engineering

The Master’s Programme in Production Engineering, started in 2007, had its first alumni Network Meeting April 26 2013 at Chalmers.
Participants travelled from Edsbyn in the north and Kalmar in the east to take part in the first annual Production Engineering Network Event.
We received this nice blog report from Kate Larsson and Jonatan Berglund, with great pictures from Ralf Rosenberg. Thanks for letting us show the material in the blog!

Director of the Master’s Programme in Production Engineering (MPPEN), Bertil Gustafsson , welcomed everyone. Assistant professor Anders Skoogh (new director for MPPEN from June 1st 2013) then described how the programme has evolved during the last years.

Experiences after graduation
Next topic on the agenda was presentations by MPPEN Alumni and they talked about their work and experiences after they graduated from Chalmers: Henrik Dernegård, Södra Cell Mönsterås
Frida Olsson, ABB Alingsås, Carl-Johan Halvordsson and Jens Arnholm, Scania Södertälje.

Old students reconnected with peers and current students
The event let old students reconnect with their peers in other industry areas and gave them the opportunity to meet current students.
The current students from both the first and second year of the master were exposed to examples of different career possibilities available to production engineers across Sweden. The alumni had several offers of summer jobs and encouraged the students to apply for available vacancies. Alumni took the opportunity to testify that MPPEN is an attractive programme for companies and industries.

Roundtable discussions
There were a number of roundtable discussions on the following topics:
Production management and capacity planning (Peter Almström)
Lean production and work instructions (Torbjörn Claesson)
Automation (Henrik Kihlman)
Virtual tools in production development (Björn Johansson)
Sustainability in production (Jon Andersson)

Assistant professor Cecilia Berlin presented ongoing research on social sustainability in industry.

The following companies/industries were represented:
AB Volvo, ABB, Chalmers, Epsilon, Intelligent Commerce Group AB, Kongsberg Automotive, Parker Hannifin, SCA, SCANIA, SIK, SPECMA, Svenska Fönster AB, Södra Cell Mönsterås, Virtual, Volvo Cars, Volvo Cars Customer Service, Volvo Trucks and ÅF.

The day ended with music by the band Decorate the sky and a buffet for all participants with further opportunity to networking!
The overall impression of the day was very good and this will probably lead to even more collaboration.
